Wine of the Month

September 2010

By Adam Chesia |

This month’s featured wine that I have chosen for your enjoyment is Beringer’s 2006 “Sbragia Limited Release” Chardonnay. This wine is made by the winemaster emeritus Ed Sbragia; every year he hand-picks small lots of grapes from all over Napa Valley in California for the Chardonnay that bears his name.

This big, rich, lush, creamy Chardonnay is aged in 100% new French Oak barrels for nine months. It offers wonderful aromas of grilled pineapple, cinnamon spice, lemon peel and butterscotch. This wine is sure to please the palate as well as the nose with exotic flavors of ripe pear, lemon curd, honeydew and hazelnut. It’s a full-bodied Chardonnay, with excellent balance and finish that is round and lasting.

The complexity of this wine can only be matched by a few, but none at this price! This wine is usually released in the $40-$50 price range, but the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has it listed for a limited time at $26. This is a steal for a wine with this depth and elegance.  The 2006 bottling was quite exceptional, but don’t let me lead you astray from trying other vintages, as the 2007 has just been released and is going to be a winner as well.

This month’s wine was chosen by Adam Chesia, restaurant manager for Simon Pearce, www.simonpearce.com.
